The Smithereens are back, although they never really went away. The New Jersey-based 1980s alt-rock group's brand new album, "The Smithereens 2011," is their first collection of all-original material in 12 years.
Songwriter and frontman Pat DiNizio says changing times called for a change in strategy.
"There wasn't a lot of interest from the labels from an old warhorse band like the Smithereens, who have never stopped doing live dates or making records. But we've realized that we needed a project to reintroduce the band to our audience," he says.
The band wrote and rehearsed the new material at Tu Casa Sound Studio in the East Village, in the same room where they bashed out their old hits almost 30 years ago.
"We had to bring it back to our roots. We rehearsed and recorded demos for our second album, 'Green Thoughts,' right in this room," says DiNizio. "I think there's a crumpled coffee cup in the corner that I threw away like 23 years ago that's still there."
The Smithereens reached their commercial peak more than 20 years ago, a lifetime ago to some in the DiNizio clan.
"My daughter is 17 and she's going to boarding school out in Santa Barbara[, Calif.], and I got an email from her recently and she said, 'Dad I didn't know it, but apparently you are famous.' She really missed the boat on the glory days, when we were doing ['Saturday Night Live'] and shows like that," says DiNizio. "And she's like, 'Dude, you're on the radio like every day.' And I said, 'Well how do you think I'm paying for your boarding school?'"
While DiNizio may be able to afford boarding school, he says the band has never forgotten its blue collar roots.
"Our music was a definite and highly original statement from a bunch of rock 'n' roll professors from New Jersey, none of us quit our day jobs until the day before we went on tour with the Ramones. And we had already had a number one single with 'Blood and Roses. I worked on the garbage truck until I was 31,'" says DiNizio. "So once we got our foot in the door and had the opportunity to have a career, we clung to it. And we're still here."
