Premiere of a community soundscape composition during DS Pride Festival
Intro speech:
"Coming up at exactly 3 o' clock we are proud to present the world premiere of a new piece of music, specially created for this occasion and this place: the "Duluth Harbor Serenade" by queer composer and quirky environmental sound artist, Philip Blackburn. Despite his British accent he calls St. Paul home, and this project has been supported by an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, with funds from the Legacy Amendment.
"We all know that this area is rich in signature sounds and sonic landmarks: the salutes between the lift bridge and boats, the trains, and the various bells around town. Now Philip has taken this ambient soundscape and dragged it kicking into the world of experimental music: a background noise remix. Scattered around the area is a flash mob maritime symphony orchestra to add to the experience.
"The performance lasts 8 minutes and is coordinated around the area so needs to start exactly on time. Please relax, listen proudly, and let the sounds wash over you. Maybe count how many you recognize. And keep listening after you leave the park because the piece really goes on forever."
