No knobs, no settings changed, just playing a few chords through it to see how it handles sound to the amp. I did discover prior to recording this that it sounds better with a clean boost feeding into it. So I recorded this video as such. I also added a delay to the sound just to enhance it a little.
I'll do more thorough testing and tweaking later this week, with knob changes, with and without the clean boost for comparison, and of course with and without the delay, as these are the various ways I'm likely to use the pedal.
Thoughts on the sound so far:
It definitely has gain, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. It can get a little farty when the guitar volume is lowered, so you might say it has a responsiveness issue. However, at good volume and with a clean boost, the gain is pretty sweet. It's not as heavy as I was expecting, but that may be a matter of tweaking knobs and variables in components, so I'll be having a look at that in the near future. For playing solos, it has all the gain you'll need to play any stunt guitar tricks and legato for days. It sustains forever. My DS-1 seems more like a clean boost now :) Although I will say the DS-1 is a much smoother and compressed distortion by comparison. The Dr. Boogie is a gritty breakup sound that cascades into a very aggressive distortion.
Farty at low volume:
I know the voltage at the transistors is lowered to 4.5V, rather than the 9V that hits the transistor in (for instance) the SHO, which is ultra-responsive to dynamics. I don't know if that's a proper analysis, but it seems a reasonable explanation. Also, it may just need tighter biasing at the transistor trimmers. I have them all set for 4.5V, and my actual readings were 4.48V - 4.55V; so I'd think that's as tight as I can get it with the trimmers. I also noticed the trimmers were very inconsistent, and temperamental to get a stable 4.5V.
