Unique 1800's 1/2 American Fiddle available on eBay Restored Antique - Possibly a Travel Fiddle
Instruments like these were often made by untrained craftsman, inspired to make music no matter where they were. This is a very unique half-size or pocket-size fiddle from the early to mid 1800s. It was built somewhere in the Midwestern United States, and came to me in fragments via a parts buyer in California. It has been fully restored to stable playing condition.
There are no identifying marks or labels of any kind.
The top, back, and neck are original, made from slab cut quilted big leaf maple. The rib sections were long gone, and have been reconstructed using the plate outlines and block heights as reference. As you can see, the ribs are very large and the body has no plate overhang, which made rib reconstruction very difficult. The newly constructed ribs were built using traditional methods. The rib stock was hand ripped from flamed big leaf maple, and fully lined and blocked. The neck has been reset into a new top block.
The neck connection near the button was split (nailed and doweled with and against the grain into the top block). The unsalvageable portion of the neck root was removed and replaced with new maple, and then securely pinned with a maple dowel. There was also a nail in the lower block, which was removed when the lower block was replaced. The back plate rusty nail mark has been filled with maple veneer.
The varnish was completely missing, but remnants of the original finish were used as inspiration for the blonde to brown layered varnish. The varnish was artificially worn to look old, and retouched with clear varnish. Original tool marks are visible through the layered varnish.
The setup is full gut setup, with a leather saddle similar to medieval bowed instruments. The tailpiece is a custom work, with a hand curved brass flour delis inlay. The pegs, tailpiece and endpin are hand polished ebony.
