Like the pre-recorded reels of yore, the remasters lack the harmonic distortion present on the on the original vinyl releases (particularly the Capitol versions) and are minus much of the compression and low-end attenuation that was evident on vinyl and the 1987 CD releases. The pre-recorded reels were sonically superior to the 1987 CD release, primarily due to the poor equalization, but not so with the remastered CD's.
Just to qualify myself for this next bit, I am a mastering engineer by profession, ( about 30 years) and as such, I have access to equipment and a back store of knowledge that most people do not possess. As an experiment, I re-EQ'd my 1987 CD of Revolver to match the EQ of the tape, and was amazed at how much better the CD sounded with this simple tweak. But there is considerable compression in the 1987 version, but not as much as the tape. Still the remastered version outshines either: it's broader dynamically, smoother, and was, surprisingly, EQ'd like the tape, but with better presence. So what if a little limiting was applied! The end user benefits are indisputable. The sound over my system with the remastered CD is very analog in nature, and at work, over my Yamaha NS10 monitors they sound great.
